What is CNC Turning

A CNC Turning machining process uses computer controlled lathe machines to rotate bars of base material, either metal or plastic materials, at high-speed whilst a cutting tool removes the raw material to form the finished product.

CNC turning is typically used to manufacture parts and components with cylindrical shapes, however our advanced CNC lathes can also produce more complex turned parts with squared or hexagonal geometries and to tight tolerances.

CNC turning when programmed using our CAM software is just as well suited for bespoke one offs through to large volume production runs of parts, consistently producing parts within tolerance and to your exact specifications.

Citizen Miyano BNE51 MSY

This is a high-end production machine that can easily cope with any high quantity turned component enquiries you may have. Whether it’s in the hundreds, or in the thousands, it is geared up to tackle them as efficiently as possible. On one side, its fed by a 3-metre Iemca bar feed and on the other side, it is unloaded by a custom made Hydrafeed Rota-Rack, allowing it to run day and night – completely unmanned. When we bought the machine, we knew that a standard Rota-Rack wouldn’t be big enough so the guys at Hydrafeed custom built us an oversized unit with an incredible 1.5 metre table allowing us to run the big quantities unattended.

The machine itself has 2 turrets with live tooling on each and 2 spindles too so as the first side of a component is being worked on, the second side is being finished concurrently, slashing cycle times by as much as half in some cases. The machine comes equipped with tool monitoring so once the tools are set, we can just leave it running.

Learn more about this machine

DMG-Mori NLX2000

This machine is fitted with a Hydrafeed MSV65 bar feeder on one side and a Hydrafeed Rota-Rack on the other which gives us the ability to run your parts overnight and completely unmanned.

It also has a Hainbuch collet chuck on each spindle allowing us a quick and efficient part change over as there’s no need to change any chuck jaws.

The lathe has a 10,000rpm built in motor turret and a Y axis too so we can get parts coming off turned and then milled in one operation. Due to how we have set this machine up, it doesn’t matter if you have a 1off prototype or a large batch of 1000+ components, it is happy either way.

DMG-Mori NLX2500

This is a bigger version of the NLX2000, but instead with a 10” chuck on the main spindle and a 6” chuck on the sub spindle allowing us to work on larger cut billets instead of bar.

As per the NLX2000, this machine also has a built-in motor turret with a Y axis ensuring your parts can go in as a billet, and come out complete.

Romi C510

This is our largest capacity CNC lathe with 1500mm between the centres. We are able to get 250mm diameter parts over the cross slide but then we can also get bigger diameters closer to the chuck, dependant on the part.

The machine has a Siemens Sinumerik 828D control and has an 8-station tool changer allowing more efficiency and accuracy when using multiple tools on a part.

Star SB20R type G

For when the quantities are high, and the parts are small. The official capacity of this machine is 22mm in diameter x 189mm long, but we can go as low as 1mm in diameter if need be.

As are our other production lathes, this is also fed by a 3-metre bar feeder allowing it to run completely unattended.

Yes, CNC turning machines can accommodate both small and large production runs. For small quantities, CNC turning offers fast setup times and the ability to produce complex parts without extensive tooling. For large-scale production, CNC turning machines can maintain high levels of precision and repeatability, ensuring consistent quality across the entire run.

All you need to do is to upload your CAD files using our quote form or email your files to [email protected] along with the specifics of your project.

CNC turning involves rotating the workpiece while a cutting tool moves along its surface, primarily producing cylindrical parts. CNC milling, on the other hand, uses a rotating cutting tool that moves across a stationary workpiece to create parts with a variety of shapes and features. Both processes can achieve high precision and accuracy.

A CNC turning machine operates by rotating a workpiece on its axis while a cutting tool moves along the surface. The machine is controlled by a computer, which interprets design data from a CAD file and translates it into precise movements for the cutting tool, resulting in the desired part geometry.

Advantages of CNC turning include high precision, repeatability, efficiency, and the ability to produce complex geometries. Disadvantages can include higher initial costs for equipment and setup, limited flexibility for certain part geometries, and the requirement for skilled operators and programming.

CNC turning services are used in various industries, including aerospace, automotive, medical, oil & gas, renewable energy, and architectural sectors. Its versatility and precision make it suitable for producing parts ranging from simple shafts to complex components with tight tolerances.

CNC turning is a manufacturing process where a computer-controlled lathe removes material from a workpiece by rotating it while a cutting tool moves along its surface. This process is used to create cylindrical parts with various features, such as grooves, threads, and tapers, with high precision and accuracy.

A CNC turning center is a versatile machine that combines CNC turning with additional capabilities, such as milling, drilling, and tapping. This allows for the production of more complex parts in a single setup, reducing the need for multiple machines and increasing overall efficiency.

CNC turning can process a wide range of materials, including metals (such as aluminium, steel, brass, and titanium), plastics (such as acrylic, nylon, and PEEK), and even certain composites. The choice of material depends on the desired properties and application of the finished part.

A CNC turner is a skilled professional who operates CNC turning machines. Their responsibilities include programming the machine, setting up the workpiece and tools, monitoring the machining process, and ensuring that the finished parts meet the required specifications and quality standards.
